Valve takes things to the next level: SteamOS is now available for third-party devices
Valve has officially announced that its SteamOS operating system is becoming available for third-party devices. The news comes as Lenovo Legion Go S is unveiled at CES 2025, the first device to ship with SteamOS pre-installed instead of Windows.
Valve noted that SteamOS was designed to provide a “smooth user experience optimized for for gaming while maintaining the power and flexibility of a PC." Although the operating system is not yet available on other portable devices, Valve has confirmed that work on its compatibility is actively ongoing.
- the company said in a statement.
In addition, rumors are actively discussed in the community about the possible revival of Steam Machines, a line of gaming PCs first released by Valve more than a decade ago. Although there is no confirmation of these rumors yet, the announcement of the SteamOS extension could be an important step towards the implementation of this idea.
At the very least, users, if they wish, will be able to independently revive this idea by installing SteamOS on their own equipment. It remains a mystery what other devices will run on SteamOS, but given the high compatibility of the operating system and its performance, it is only a matter of time before it appears on other devices.
